September Guidance

This month, we will be going into classrooms focusing on the topic of goal setting; why we set goals, how to identify goals, and the difference between long and short-term goals. At each grade level we will have an activity or a video to aid the students understanding. Students will then have an opportunity to create a goal for themselves.

5th Grade: We will have a PB&J activity in which Ms. I will have one student 'help' her make a sandwich. Ms. I will follow the instructions of the student exactly. After, as a class, we will discuss how the activity relates to goal setting (being specific, getting steps in the right order, clarifying and asking questions when needed).

6th Grade: We will have an activity in which the students will play Giant Jenga. After, as a class we will discuss how the activity relates to goal setting (making a solid foundation, what happens where there are too many 'gaps', and how a tower could eventually fall with too many 'gaps').

7th Grade: We will watch the video titled, "The Ascent of Alex Honnold", the story of one of the most successful free solo climbers in the world. After, as a class, we will discuss how the video relates to goal setting (what does Alex need to do to reach his goal of ascending a mountain, what are the short and long-term goals he needs to create and achieve in order to be successful).

8th Grade: We will be doing an activity called Your Passion Roadmap, A step-by-step guide to mapping out your goals. In this activity, Ms. Jo will ask students to dream big! Write down as many wishes, big and small, as they can think up, then we will systematically break down one of their wishes into bite-sized, manageable steps. We will revisit their goals throughout the year to see how they are coming along.
